Last year Songwon County stood out in the national presentation of technical experience and exhibition of scientific research achievements in the agricultural sector.
Located in Jagang Province in the northwestern part of the DPRK, the county is mostly covered with rolling mountains around 1 000m above sea level and narrow and deep valleys, hence the arable land amounting to only several percent of the county’s territory.
In recent years, however, the county has greatly benefitted from the introduction of mixed cropping.
It has adopted mixed cropping for 80 percent of its maize fields by planting potato, soy bean, wheat or other crops between maize rows.
The results are equivalent to hundreds of hectares of new land being under cultivation–a boost in crop yields.
Farmers say the mixed planting of crops with different heights helps increase the amount of sunshine to the crops and improve ventilation, adding that the fields are easier to handle.
Some years ago several farms started to cultivate wheat instead of potato or soy bean and grow dry-field rice as an aftercrop. Now they do not envy lowlands their paddy fields as they produce rice to enrich their dietary life.
In mixed cropping, crops vary in sowing and harvest seasons, which helps ease shortage of manpower.
Every year farmers change the places of crop cultivation while doing twice or thrice farming by mixed cropping, which makes it possible to keep the balance of nutritious elements in soil and diversify the variety of soil microorganisms. This keeps soil from being damaged by multiple cropping.
With soil utility enhanced and intensive farming put on a higher level, an increasing number of units in the county are boosting crop yields year on year more than planned.
