Chongmyong, one of the 24 seasonal divisions, is deeply associated with the life of the Korean people from olden times.
Chongmyong, which means the clear and bright spring weather begins, falls on April 4 or 5 every year.
It falls on April 4 this year.
For its climatic features, it serves as an important occasion in farming.
The Korean people would sow seeds, the first process of farming, on this occasion.
They sowed such seeds of field crops as foxtail millet, millet, beans and red beans and vegetable seeds, including pumpkin, radish, lettuce, red pepper and spring onion.
They also sowed the seeds of balsam and other flowers in their gardens after removing the traces of winter.
Visit to the ancestors’ graves on chongmyong is also a custom of the Korean nation.
