Kim Ryang Gi was a painter active in the second half of the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910).
He was a son of Kim Hong Do and worked as an official of Tohwaso (the only government office of the feudal Joson dynasty in charge of drawings).
His father was a progressive realistic painter representative of the Korean art world in the 18th and 19th centuries.
True to his family’s tradition of drawing, he was good at painting portraits and landscapes.
According to historical records, he was better than his father in painting landscapes and buildings. His method of drawing portraits was very similar to his father’s. In particular, their methods of drawing supernatural beings were too identical to distinguish them from each other. Over 20 typical paintings are now preserved in the Korean Art Gallery, including A Boy with Herb in His Hand, Carrying Herbs on the Back, Boating and A Subject Appealing to the King. His drawings of figures and supernatural beings are so vivid that they look like real persons.
He was famed in history for his good drawing of animals and flowers.
