On May 23, Ko Jong Gum, a 21-year-old teacher of Tongsong Kindergarten in Songrim City, North Hwanghae Province, was badly burned in her eyes due to an accident and carried to an ophthalmic hospital in the capital city of Pyongyang.
“Can I see again?”
Her question touched officials and medical workers of the hospital on the raw and her mother kept crying.
The medical workers held a consultation to discuss specific surgical operation. Among them was Jang Sol Hui, a doctor in charge of the patient.
The operation started.
Many people eagerly waited for the successful operation.
After a while, the door of the operating theatre opened and the doctors came out with a beaming smile on their faces.
The operation was crowned with success.
Next day, the in-patients in the sickroom were surprised at the sight of Jang Sol Hui who stepped in the room with a bandage on one of her eyes.
They came to know that she devoted her conjunctiva to Jong Gum.
She, too, was a girl.
Jong Gum’s mother expressed her gratitude to Jang, holding her hands in excitement.
“Any medical worker who lives in our society can do it,” said Jang.
