The Friendship Tower was erected in 1959 in order to recall forever the exploits of the martyrs of the Chinese People’s Volunteers who assisted the Korean people in their struggle at the cost of their blood during the Korean war (1950-1953).
Its model was examined by President Kim Il Sung and Zhou Enlai, former Premier of the People’s Republic of China.
The project for its reconstruction, which kicked off in November 1983, was completed in October 1984.
The 30-metre-high tower occupies an area of 120 000 square metres, with a total floor space of 576 square metres.
It was built with 1 025 pieces of granite and marble, the number of which symbolizes October 25, the day when the Chinese Peoples’ Volunteers took part in the Korean war.
The tower consists of a platform, two floors, a tower body and a star.
The star on the top of the tower represents friendship and unity of the two peoples of the DPRK and China.
Embossed on the façade of the tower body is the letter “Friendship Tower”.
The first floor of the tower consists of exterior and interior parts. Written on the front of the exterior part is an inscription about the immortal exploits performed by the CPV and the international friendship between the two peoples of the two countries.
Embossed on both ends of each surface are the patterns of peonies. The right surface shows the images of the CPV soldiers fighting heroically in the Korean war and their blood ties with the Korean people during the struggle. The left surface depicts their images assisting with sincerity the postwar rehabilitation of the Korean people.
The interior part is arranged with a five-point-star-shaped chandelier on the ceiling and candlelight lamps with draping decorations on four pillars, which symbolize the memory of the CPV martyrs. The three sides of walls are decorated with mural paintings dealing with the CPV’s participation in the Korean war, battles and support of the postwar rehabilitation. The list of the CPV martyrs is also seen there.
The four sides of the second floor depict peonies.
