The Monument to the Mausoleum of King Kwanggaetho was built in 414 in
praise of the exploits of King Kwanggaetho, the 24th King of Koguryo. It is a monolith which looks like a square
pillar. It is 6.34 metres high. About 1,800
letters were inscribed on four sides of the monument. Here is Doctor and Associate Professor Kang Se Gwon, Section Chief of the History Institute under the Academy of Social Sciences.
"The Monument to the Mausoleum of King Kwanggaetho tells a lot of
valuable information of the
then political and socio-economic situation and class relations of
Koguryo and its relations with Silla, Paekje and Japan, which cannot be found in documentary records. It is one of
the oldest heritages of inscriptions on monuments written by ancient
Koreans. It is considered to be one of the world cultural heritages which is
valuable worldwide as well as at home for the precious
historical materials in the inscriptions, their rich contents and the virile and bold sentences and strokes." The inscriptions deal with the story about the founding of the
country by the founder-king of Koguryo, ensuing succession to the thrones,
feats of King Kwanggaetho and the
purpose of the erection of the monument. They also describe
the feats of King Kwanggaetho according to the facts in a chronological
order, and provisions of the ordinance on managing and keeping the Mausoleum of the King. They serve as valuable
materials in studying the
history of the Koguryo Dynasty and the history of the East in those days.
