The Arch of Triumph is standing in the capital city Pyongyang. It is a monument praising the exploits performed by the great leader Kim Il Sung for national liberation.
Embossed on its pillars are figures "1925" and "1945".
The figure "1925" refers to the year when Kim Il Sung set out on the road of revolution.
In Korea, the first half of the 20th century was a dark era when the Korean people had to live as slaves under the colonial rule of the Japanese imperialists. The 5,000 year-long history and culture of the Korean nation were almost eclipsed and its spoken and written languages and even surnames and names obliterated. So Korea was on the way to extinction.
The popular masses of broad stripes including workers, peasants, youth and students shed their blood in resistance to the Japanese imperialists. Seeing them, Kim Il Sung warmly felt the national dignity and will for independence no force could undermine.
And looking at the daily-increasing Japanese army and police and prisons, and the wagons and cargo ships carrying the wealth plundered from the Korean nation, he clearly understood that the Japanese imperialists were the most heinous enemy to the freedom and dignity of the Korean people and vicious exploiters and plunderers imposing unbearable poverty and hunger upon them.
On January 22, Juche 14(1925) Kim Il Sung left his native place Mangyongdae in his teens with a great ambition to liberate the country.
The homeland which was turned into a big living hell hardened his resolve to fight to the death to revenge on the enemy of the Korean nation.
On February 3 Kim Il Sung reached the Amnok River flowing along the northwestern border of the country.
He felt his heart heavy because he wondered when he would be able to tread his land again after departure that day.
Across the Amnok River was a foreign land.
Recollecting that time, Kim Il Sung wrote in his reminiscences as follows: That day I underwent a truly painful psychological experience. Picturing in my mind the miserable reality of the motherland, I made a grim resolve not to return before Korea had become independent.
Kim Il Sung organized and led the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle for 20 years from the day and accomplished the historic cause of national liberation on August 15, Juche 34(1945).
The figure "1945" refers to the year of national liberation.
