The Party Founding Museum, a two-story building of a peculiar architectural style, is located at the foot of Mt Haebang in the central part of the capital city of Pyongyang.

It is the historic site where President Kim Il Sung founded the Workers’ Party of Korea immediately after Korea’s liberation from the Japanese military occupation and accomplished the cause of building the state and the army while working there between September Juche 34 (1945) and January Juche 38 (1949).

Drawing on the successes and experience he had already gained in building a party during the period of the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle, he wisely organized and led the work of founding a Juche-type revolutionary party without delay after the country’s liberation.

He first paid close attention to firmly consolidating local party organizations before establishing the party central committee in party founding.

As full preparations were made, he convened a preparatory meeting for founding a party on October 5, 1945. After making an analysis of the strikingly different situations created in the north and south of Korea, he stressed the Central Organizing Committee of the Communist Party of North Korea (CPNK) should be founded as a powerful central leadership body of the Party in north Korea as it had favourable conditions for founding the Party, so as to push ahead with the overall Korean revolution in a proactive way.

Kim Il Sung convened the Inaugural Congress of the Central Organizing Committee of the CPNK on October 10, 1945 in Pyongyang.

The Congress formed the Central Organizing Committee of the CPNK as the central leadership body of the Party, and declared the founding of the Party. The DPRK celebrates October 10 as the founding anniversary of the Workers’ Party of Korea.

Later, the building was the venue of the enlarged executive committee meetings of the CPNK Central Organizing Committee on seven occasions, from the second to the eighth, and other important meetings of the Party and the state including the enlarged joint conference of the Central Committees of the CPNK and the New Democratic Party of North Korea, held to merge them.

After founding the Party, Kim Il Sung united broad sections of the people around it, satisfactorily solved the problems of establishing the government, building the armed forces and training native cadres, and further developed the Party through the struggle for implementing democratic reforms including the agrarian reform.

Here in this building he delivered the New Year Address for Juche 36 (1947) through radio, met with many people from all walks of life including workers and farmers, and indicated the path ahead of a new Korea.

In order to hand down to posterity the exploits he performed in Party founding, the DPRK preserves the building, which had been occupied by the CPNK Central Organizing Committee, as the Party Founding Museum.

Seen in the museum are a plaster figure and photos of Kim Il Sung . His office and reception room, the conference room and such historic relics as the desks and chair he used are preserved in their original state.
