Ryangchon Temple built in 753 is located in Rakchon-ri, Kowon County, South Hamgyong Province. At present, it consists of Taeung Hall, Manse Pavilion and Muryangsu Hall.
Taeung Hall was rebuilt in 1636 and Manse Pavilion, in 1729.
Taeung Hall, the main shrine of the temple, comprises three bays (11. 6 metres) in the façade and three bays (7. 35 metres) on both sides, and has a double-eaved, gabled roof with brackets.
All the building parts, corner pillars in particular, are thick, thus giving a sense of stability.
Such ornamental sculptures as dragon, phoenix and lotus flower are very delicate.
The most conspicuous in Taeung Hall are red and blue paintings on its ceiling.
The paintings which were drawn 300 years ago still preserve their original colours and appearance and, in particular, the level of depicting portraits can be said to be the best among those in temples across the country.
The movements and expressions of figures that dance playing various musical instruments are lifelike for bold and vigorous brushwork.
It is said that the portraits are by no means inferior to those drawn by Kim Hong Do (1745-?), a famous painter in the 18th century, in the aspects of depiction and individuality.
Ryangchon Temple, which boasts of about 1 300-year-long history, is now registered and preserved as a relic of national treasure.
