In Pyongyang, the capital of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, there are many historic relics including the Taesongsan Fort and the Anhak Palace. Among them is a wooden bridge of Koguryo on the River Taedong.
The wooden bridge was built in front of the Anhak Palace, the royal palace of the Koguryo Dynasty, in the early 5th century.
It was about 375 metres long in total and about 9 metres wide. Most of its frame was thick balk, which was 38 centimetres wide, 26 centimetres thick and 8 to 10 metres long.
Choe Sung Thaek, Section Chief of the Archaeological Institute under the Academy of Social Sciences, says:
"The entrance to the bridge was like the ribs of a fan and duckboards were densely laid on it for convenient entry. And longitudinal and transverse beams were laid on the main body of the bridge and thick duckboards on them in order. So the bridge was good-looking and convenient for traffic. Weighty balks were laid crosswise and firm square pillars on them in the part of the entrance to the bridge with no regular touch of water. And cribs were made with balks and stones put into them in the part of the main body with regular touch of the flowing water. This bridge was built by solidly linking all the big and small joints in a dovetailed way without using metal things like nails and cramps."
There is the site of lighthouse built like a log cabin at the eastern entrance to the bridge.
The bridge shows the high wooden architecture of the Korean ancestors. It is one of the oldest and big bridges which is rare not only in the DPRK but also in the world.
