Glazed earthenware of Hoeryong is a typical one of Korea.
An earthen vessel is a kind of pottery, which is made by moulding it with red argil, baking it at a temperature of 800 ℃ and glazing it before baking it again at a temperature of 1 200 ℃.
Hoeryong glazed earthenware has unique colour, simple form, various kinds and high utility.
In general, glazed earthenware is mainly yellowish, reddish, blueish and blackish brown.
But, Hoeryong glazed earthenware is different from pottery produced in other localities as its glazing material is opaque yet gives graceful and glossy impression.
It has such high utility as convenience to handle for its light weight against its volume and strong resistance to frost and heat.
An old document reads that a large jar measuring two stretches of a man’s arms round was carried on an A-frame to Longjing of China. This shows that it was very thin and light.
Hoeryong glazed earthenware, used for preserving rice and kimchi , never broke off itself and its glaze never peeled off even with the passage of decades. And it is said that food put in it neither spoils easily nor causes endemic.
The locals in the northern Hamgyong area and other parts of the country regarded Hoeryong glazed earthenware as a must dowry for their children.
Hoeryong glazed earthenware, one of proud folk crafts with a long historical tradition and culture, is further encouraged thanks to the State policy on conserving the national heritage.
