Eleven years ago, she was deprived of the use of her legs.
One day, a teacher of Jesan Primary School in Hyongjesan District, Pyongyang, came to her village to survey school-aged children. She asked U In if she wanted to go to school. Instead, the girl dropped her head.
She hid her legs under the skirt, with tears lingering in her eyes.
Next day, the teacher visited her again and said: Let’s go to school on my back.
From then on, she started to carry the girl to the school, piggyback, come rain or shine, every day. Her name was Ham Ok Suk.
She taught the girl the method of holding a pencil and reading and counting one by one. She was very happy to see the girl make progress in her study and gave her new school things. During breaks between lessons, she put the girl’s legs on her knees and massaged them. She also prepared nutritious foods for the girl. Her sincere efforts began to show a sign of improvement in the girl’s legs.
Not only U In and her parents but all villagers were as delighted with a dreamlike reality as if they were their own.
Then, she began to receive intensive treatment in the Pyongyang University of Medical Sciences Hospital.
Thanks to its medical workers who made devoted efforts to rehabilitate her and the sincerity of unidentified well-wishers, she was finally able to walk again by herself.
After leaving the hospital she wrote a letter of thanks to the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un .
Kim Jong Un read her letter and sent her a reply letter.
Afterwards, U In participated in the celebrations of the 70th founding anniversary of the Korean Children’s Union and had a photo session with Kim Jong Un .
Now she is studying under the close concern of many people, including the officials of the college and the faculty and classmates who take warm care of her health lest she should feel any slightest inconvenience.
