Omija ( Fructus Schizandrae ) was named after its five tastes. From olden times, the Koreans have widely used it as Koryo medicinal stuff and a raw material of syrup or tea.
Omija tree ( Schizandrae chinensis ) is a medicinal and edible plant. In May it comes into bloom with its white flowers going well with its green leaves to add beauty to the surrounding scenery, and in autumn it is laden with plump red fruits. So, it can be cultivated for vertical forestation.
It enjoys growing demand for its greening and economic value.
The Central Botanical Garden has recently developed a new method of propagating the tree. The existing methods showed low rooting and survival rates and required much labour in tending seedbeds.
The new method makes it possible to propagate seedlings on a large scale by making effective use of suckers and rootstocks which were cut off or culled out in the past.
It also makes it possible to save much labour as it ensures high rooting and survival rates and moves up the transplanting period by one year.
At present, the method is being widely introduced into several units.
