The Monument to the Great Victory in Yonsong built in the period of the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910) stands in the township of Yonan County, South Hwanghae Province.
The monument is a relic of national treasure built in the early 17th century in order to hand down the victory won by the residents in Yonan Fortress who beat back the Japanese invaders under the command of Ri Jong Am during the Imjin Patriotic War (1592-1598).
A black marble body stands on a two-tiered rectangular granite plinth. Its upper part is of semicircular shape without a head stone.
The inscription of the monument was said to be written by Ri Hang Bok (1556-1618), a famous literary man in those days.
It reads that Ri Jong Am defended Yonan Fortress from the Japanese invasion and chased the retreating enemies to destroy them.
At the news of invasion of the Japanese pirates, corrupt officials deserted the fortress and even the remaining soldiers began to scatter far and wide.
At that time, Ri Jong Am climbed up the pile of purple eulalia in front of the fortress gate and asked a soldier to set fire to the pile the moment the Japanese made entry into the fortress.
Inspired by his patriotic call that he could not look with folded arms on the Japanese invaders trampling down the country, even if he might be burned into ashes, the soldiers and righteous volunteers turned out as one, shooting arrows and throwing balls of flames at the enemies and pouring hot water upon them, and finally achieved a great victory in the battle to defend the fortress. The story is still being told by the Monument to the Great Victory in Yonsong.
The monument is 2.54 metres high.
