Yongmyong Temple was built in the period of Koguryo (277 B.C.-A.D. 668).
The temple, which had been located at the foot of the picturesque Moran Hill in Kyongsang-dong, Central District, Pyongyang, was destroyed by the enemy bombings during the Fatherland Liberation War (1950-1953), but two stone lions still remain there.
The lions, which were made of granite, sit with forelegs put ahead, stare with glaring eyes, turn up noses with mouths agape, throw out their chests with muscular legs, so as to show their valour and strength.
The stone sculpture, which depicts the specific features of a fierce animal in a bold and concise and yet reduced style, represents the valiant spirit and will of Koguryo people.
It is hardly possible to see its details due to the action of the weather, but the sculpture showcases the stone dressing technique in those days.
