Chongdo Abrasion Cave is in a hillside in the waters off Hongwon County, South Hamgyong Province.
Originally, the hillside was an islet, but it was completely linked with the land as it was filled up with sand piled up between the land and the islet by sedimentation of river and sea. The front and back sides of the luniform, granite-gneiss cave are vertical.
Two embayment turned into a cliff by the abrasion of seawater, and a weak part began to be wave-beaten to form the present cave.
As a through cave of ten metres long, the seawater in the cave covers an area of about 20㎡.
The width and height of the cave at the point where the cave meets the sea is 12 and 9 metres respectively, and the thickness of ceiling is about four metres.
This place which provides an easy access to the observation of the earth’s crustal movements, change and erosion of seawater, and sedimentation of rivers and sea, it is of great scientific significance and adds more beauty to the coastal scenery.
Designated as natural monument No. 280, it is under preservation.
