The Taeryonggang Fort with a total length of about 240km was built with the Taeryong River as a natural moat in the closing years of Koguryo (277 B.C.-A.D. 668).
From olden times, the Taeryong River meanders through the traffic junction in the northwestern region of Korea. So, only after crossing the river, one could have an access to the south through the three routes in the northwestern region.
In this sense, it was an inland fort to block the three routes.
The fort, which was built as part of in-depth defence facilities to check the enemy’s invasion of the Walled City of Pyongyang, the capital of Koguryo, rendered great services to building up the country’s defence capability.
Erected in all sections on the east of the river, it had big branch walls stretching from Sambong-ri of Pakchon County to the southwest of Sinbong-ri of Jongju City. Attached to the main walls and big branch walls were several small branch walls.
The walls along the open area of the riverside and the valley still remain comparatively well, and the slope and ridge at the riverside have their clear traces.
The cliffs along the riverside were used as the fort walls as they were.
The construction method of the walls varied according to sections: building walls with stones, piling up stones before tamping them with clay, and building walls with stones mixed with clay.
The walls which still remain are 7 to 10 metres high.
The walls which passed the valley were surely provided with drainage facilities.
The fort, which made a contribution to arresting the enemy’s invasion and ensuring the security of the county, is a priceless historical relic showcasing a high sense of patriotism and the fort construction techniques of the Korean ancestors.
