The Imjin Patriotic War was fought by Koreans against the Japanese invaders between 1592 and 1598.
Ju Song Chol, Section Chief of the History Institute under the Academy of Social Sciences, says:
"The Japanese invaders had long prepared a war of aggression. They made a large-scale armed invasion of Korea in April 1592.
Their strategy was so-called 'simultaneous advance of land and naval forces' with the land force as the main force and the naval force supporting and joining its advance.
At that time the war was fierce both on the sea and on the land."
In January 1593 a fierce battle was fought in the Walled City of Pyongyang to repulse the Japanese invaders and win back the walled city.
The Korean army led by General Kim Ung So attacked the walled city on January 6 and annihilated the Japanese invaders and won back the walled city on January 8.
In the battle it killed and injured over 10,000 enemy troops, captured thousands of horses and many weapons, and saved more than 1,000 inhabitants arrested by the enemy.
The victory in the battle greatly encouraged the volunteers and soldiers fighting in many parts of Korea and powerfully roused them to counterattack against the enemy.
