The Zoology Research Institute under the State Academy of Sciences surveyed and evaluated animal diversity of the Mt Chilbo Biosphere Reserve.
Last year, they conducted a field survey of the composition of species of the main animal groups and resources of the main species in the Mt Chilbo Biosphere Reserve, one of the international biosphere reserves in the DPRK.
During the survey, over a dozen species of mammals were observed including bear, raccoon dog, wild boar, roe deer and antelope.
It was discovered that mammals in the survey area account for 24.4% of national land mammals and its endangered mammals for 13.1% of nationwide endangered mammal species.
Also observed in summer from June to August were over 800 birds in 50-odd species, including pheasant, spot-billed duck, heron, Phalacrocorax filamentosus , bald eagle and Falco subbuteo, and such amphibians and reptiles as salamander, bell toad, toad, Rana ornativentris, Takydromus amurensis , big snake, water snake, pit viper and others.
Experts said that the Mt Chilbo Biosphere Reserve is rich in animal species and the area plays an important role in inhabitation and breeding of animals.
