Kim Chaek City in North Hamgyong Province gains profits by making a proactive use of wind power.
As the city is located in a coastal area, windless days are very rare all the year round.
In the past the city paid close attention to an effective use of wind resource in conformity with the climatic features of the area.
As a result, wind-driven generators were installed in many houses in the city.
However, some residents had little interest in the wind resource, because the generating capacity of the generators failed to reach a satisfactory level.
Therefore, the city buckled down to the development of a high capacity generator convenient to use and with low production cost.
In the course of this, the workers and technicians in the city came up with many technical innovation plans including a new model of blade and a rational way to solve the problem of important materials. Thus, the city could manufacture a generator with a generating capacity three times higher than the previous one.
The city did not rest on its laurels.
It proceeded to intensify research and find out rational methods to lay material and technical foundations for improving the generating capacity and mass producing the wind-driven generators.
At present projects are being pushed to establish a wind-based electricity generation system not only in residential districts but also in factories, enterprises and other units so as to solve the problem of electricity needed in cultural life and normalized production by local efforts.
The residents in the city unanimously say that the use of natural energy brings profits to families and the country and that it is a work worth trying.
