Manbokhwa ( Cymbidium Manbokhwa ) is the flower deeply kept in the mind of the Korean people for its unique beauty and the story associated with it.
In March Juche 100 (2011) Chairman Kim Jong Il and the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un visited the Pyongyang Floriculture Institute.
When the Chairman dropped in at a greenhouse of the institute filled with newly-bred young flower plants, the Chairman was told that they would bloom this year and said that he would name them when they flower.
In December that year, the newly-bred flowers came to bloom.
Though they bloomed more beautifully than officials and researchers at the institute had visualized, they had no idea how to name the flower as the Chairman passed away unexpectedly.
When Kim Jong Un received such a report, he named the flower Manbokhwa , and sent his autograph that the flower is really beautiful.
During his visit to the institute again in September 2012, he said Manbokhwa is not only beautiful and but also blooms long, and that it is a good species of flower as it is highly resistant to both high and lower temperatures and can be easily cultivated everywhere.
The flower which blooms from December to April next year makes people happier as they help it bloom on the occasion of February 16 (birthday of Chairman Kim Jong Il ) and April 15 (birthday of President Kim Il Sung ), the greatest national holidays.
