Sir, I still seem to be in a dream whenever I open my eyes because I am so pleased to see such a bright and beautiful world clearly with the two eyes. Then I extend my thanks to you for all your sincere efforts to relieve me of my anxiety about the loss of eyesight in one of my eyes….”
Kim Tong Won, deputy director in charge of technical affairs of the Pyongyang Municipal Ophthalmic Hospital, often receives such letters of thanks.
Among the senders of the letters is Jang Yong Hyok living in Yonphung-dong, Hyesan City, Ryanggang Province.
The doctor came to know Jang in April Juche 110 (2021). While examining the eyes of outpatients, he saw 35-year-old Jang whose one eye could not see well owing to corneal opacity. If the symptom worsens, he would lose the sight of the eye.
After seeing the result of the examination of Jang’s eye, the doctor said, “Let’s treat the disease together.”
He was not sure to succeed, but his words made Jang pleased as if he could just see well with the eye.
Through several consultative meetings, Kim decided to apply lamellar rotational autografts which was newly pioneered across the world. To this end, he carried out scores of operations on animals. And he also conducted research for new methods to prevent possible postoperative complications. At last, he succeeded in operating on the eye of the patient. A month after the operation, the sight of the eye was restored remarkably. Now he lives without any inconvenience.
In the past 19 years the doctor has carried out thousands of operations and cured numerous patients with eye diseases. He has introduced dozens of new operation methods into clinical practice for the first time in the country. Besides, he wrote several reference books, came up with not a few inventions and introduced new techniques, thus rendering services to the development of the country’s medical technology.
He says, “If we doctors regard the eyes of patients as our own and put our heart and soul into translating their aspiration for sight, it will possibly bring about good results, I think.”
