In recent years, disastrous meteorological and climate phenomena have occurred frequently, creating considerable difficulties in economic construction and agricultural production.
Last year, such phenomena like drought, heavy rain, cold, hail and sandy dust were observed in several regions in the country, and sultry weather and high temperature continued in most parts in summer.
In spring this year, drought hit the most regions centring South and North Hwanghae provinces while those in the east coast witnessed the cold. In late June, much rain dropped in almost all parts of the country, affecting unfavourable influence upon manuring, cultivating and harvesting of early crops.
Entering the rainy season in the coming days, downpour and rainy spell are expected in the local regions of the country, and it will be followed by high temperature and intense heat. Moreover, it is expected to experience typhoons in this period.
To cope with this, the State Hydro-Meteorological Administration is further intensifying monitoring, forecasting and informing of the expected disastrous meteorological and climatic phenomena so that different sectors can organize scrupulously the work of minimizing damage.
More advanced and scientific methods for weather forecasting have been developed and introduced, practical measures are being taken to ensure the accuracy of meteorological observation, and monitoring of the extreme downpour, heavy rain, hail and typhoon is being further strengthened.
Together with this, research is going on in depth to put the marine and ocean weather forecast on a more scientific footing so as to minimize damage from possible tsunami, strong wind and high waves.
