Sim Kwang Chol, vice-chancellor of Phyongsong University of Coal-mining Industry, has rendered active services to scientific research, education and training of reserve talents for over 30 years.

Having produced a number of competent academic degree and title holders in the field of mining engineering, he wrote various kinds of textbooks, reference books and pamphlets conducive to the development of educational science and presented dozens of valuable papers, drawing the attention of the academic circles.

He has been awarded more than 20 national certificates including those of scientific and technological achievements, inventions and registration of national sci-tech achievements at the 32nd National Sci-Tech Festival and other national exhibitions and presentations.

He has devoted his wisdom and zeal to developing the country’s science and training reserve talents with his sincere devotion and conscience till now when he works as a vice-chancellor responsible for scientific affairs of the university through a researcher after his graduation from the university.

Possessed of extraordinary brains and burning passion, he had already taken part in the study of designing tunnels in difficult and complicated coal mines and demonstrated his outstanding abilities, catching the eyes of experts and teachers in his university days.

After becoming a lecturer of the university, he wrote many textbooks and reference books including Mining Information Processing , Principle of Practical Numerical Analysis and Application , and helped his students raise their application and practical abilities; he gives lectures in easy terms and with the help of principles by combining basic theories with practical education.

He spares nothing–profound knowledge, technology and experience he has accumulated with painstaking efforts–to train teachers and students to be pioneers and owners of cutting-edge technology, development- and practice-oriented talents.

He does not rest content on his laurels, but makes strenuous efforts to attain a higher goal.

In order to protect the health of coal miners and ensure their tunnelling speed, he worked with them in a pit face, developing a blasting gas neutralizer with organic additives to reduce the time of gas neutralization from 50 minutes to 5.

Later, he developed a drilling and blasting technology and wood prop preservatives to increase the tunnelling speed of rock pits, a pressing task in reality, and electric drills effective for mechanization of mining operations, and applied them to coal mines, rendering great services to the development of coal-mining industry of the country.

In recognition of his scientific research findings, the country invited him as a delegate to national conferences and celebrations and put him forward as a scientist well known throughout the country.
