West Coast Exchange, North Korea Watcher Conference, Sept. 2026

In late June, NATO Summit was held in Madrid, the capital city of Spain.

This summit adopted a “strategic concept” document touching upon the issue of China for the first time.

In this document, NATO termed China as a “systematic challenge” to its values, interests and security and criticized China for its military build-up, economic policy, technological development, etc.

A few days ago, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense of China sharply denounced NATO as a “war machine”, “military tool” for the realization of the U.S. hegemony and “systematic challenge” to the global peace and stability, saying that NATO of the Atlantic Ocean has been recently pursuing confrontation between the camps by projecting its power in the Asia-Pacific and continuously threatening the security of the region.

He continued as follows:

NATO’s new strategic concept document – which turns black into white and incites confrontation – found fault with and randomly criticized China’s regular military development and its national defense policy.

China resolutely rejects this.

We solemnly warn NATO that it cannot frighten Chinese army with pressure and containment, and cannot deceive world people by falsehood and defilement.

The time when Chinese people were subjected to humiliation would never be repeated.

We demand that NATO stop its act of creating tension by inventing lies and fomenting confrontation between camps.

In conclusion, the spokesperson stressed that China would firmly safeguard its sovereignty, security and development interests and would not let any forces outside the region throw the Asia-Pacific region into chaos.
