Samhung Middle School is located in Mangyongdae District of Pyongyang.
The school is associated with the exploits of President Kim Il Sung who personally chose its site and named it as he paid close attention to the education of younger generations.
In October Juche 34 (1945), soon after Korea’s liberation, the President, though he was busy leading the building of a new Korea, visited the then Chilgol in Ha-ri, Ryongsan Sub-county, Taedong County, South Phyongan Province.
While talking to the villagers unceremoniously, he received a request for setting up a middle school in the village.
Until then, there was not a middle school in the area and the sub-county had only one primary school. Furthermore, the primary school was so small that only some 200 among thousands of children in the sub-county were attending it.
After hearing their opinions, he gave instructions to build middle schools and universities in different parts of the country and went to the spot to choose the site for the middle school.
Some days later, he sent a truck and lathe and water-pump to be used for the school construction.
True to his noble intention, the local people turned out in the construction and finished the preparations for opening the school in a short time.
On November 22, the President met teachers and officials from the village who came to report him about the inauguration of the school and said that when the rising generations became knowledgeable, morally sound and physically strong, could they grow into excellent pillars of the country and the country and nation would thrive.
And he named the school “Samhung Middle School” in the sense that it contributes to the country’s prosperity by training talents who are knowledgeable, morally impeccable and physically strong.
To hand down his immortal exploits through generations, the school erected a monument to his revolutionary exploits.
The school bell which started ringing in the small unknown mountainous village resounds throughout the country now under the benefits of the universal 12-year compulsory education.
