One autumn, farmers of Samjigang Farm in Jaeryong County of South Hwanghae Province were delighted with the results of their scientific farming while reviewing their work.
However, it was not that easy to make all farmers accept scientific farming.
In her early days of starting the work of the chairwoman of the management board of the farm, the method of sparse planting of paddy rice seedlings was being introduced into the fields of some workteams.
Some farmers did additional transplanting as they were obsessed with an idea that more rice-planting meant a bumper harvest.
In order to show them the superiority of scientific farming in practice, not in words, she cultivated rice seedlings with utmost concern, paying close attention to their growth conditions. As a result, the rice plants in experimental fields developed many stems.
That autumn, farmers were open-mouthed at the sight of the fields full of rice ears.
After its first success in the sparse culture, the farm introduced the method into all other fields. The yield of rice increased by almost two times than that in the past.
Farmers’ interest in the new farming technique and their enthusiasm for introducing it than others grew stronger.
She rebuilt the agricultural sci-tech learning space in order to disseminate more agricultural science and techniques to farmers. She not only renovated its building and increased the number of computers but extend the intranet to workteams so as to make farmers have access to it any time and observe field conditions on a real-time basis.
Since then, advanced farming techniques began to be spread more quickly, and farmers were able to manufacture deep layer fertilizer, sprayer, weeder and other efficient farming machines by themselves.
At present, there are hundreds of farmers who are enrolled in the study-while-you-work system or who have finished the course.
Ri Hye Suk is convinced that the future of her farm will get brighter thanks to their efforts as they are fully equipped with advanced farming techniques.
