Worldwide efforts are now directed to mass-producing barley sprout by a hydroponic method.
According to research findings, barley sprout serves as an ideal feed of such grass-eating domestic animals as milch cow and goat for its crude protein content much higher than barley and maize.
Hamju County, South Hamgyong Province in the northeast of the country has a limited area of farmland. Such being the condition, it built a barley sprout cultivation ground covering 300 square metre in the Hungsang Milch Cow Farm to produce larger amounts of feed for domestic animals than before.
According to its workers, they cut barley sprouts as long as a span every five to seven days, which is equivalent to feed obtained from tens of hectares of land.
Three persons manage the cultivation ground, which is fully equipped with heating and light regulation system to ensure steady production even in winter.
