Kong Myong Song, chief of the Folklore Research Institute under the Academy of Social Sciences, is a candidate academician who has rendered a great service in comprehensively systematizing the ancient history of Korea.
He loved the history and culture of the Korean nation. From 1983, he received lectures from Kim Sok Hyong, Hong Ki Mun and Kim Pyong Je, prominent scholars in the historical and linguistic sector at College of Social Sciences. After graduation, he became a researcher through the postgraduate course.
At the age of 25, he was enrolled in a think-tank for scientifically solving the problem of Tangun, the founder-king of the Korean nation.
Young as he was, he embarked on the road of investigation together with prestigious historians of the country.
With a single mind to make a contribution to finding the tomb of Tangun, he tried to find relics and remains as many as possible. In the course of this, he found out the original location of the tomb and relics and remains and the bones of Tangun and his wife in Munhung-ri, Kangdong County of Pyongyang, and thus played a leading role in proving the existence of Tangun in practice.
Besides, he received a doctorate in history in his thirties in 2002 by writing a valuable paper which scientifically systematized the formation and development of the names of successive states in Korea and their historical meanings.
He has authored tens of books, including “National Symbols of the DPRK”, “National Bird of the DPRK—Goshawk” and “National Tree of the DPRK—Pine Tree”, and trained tens of doctors.
He participated in tens of international symposiums, including the 11th ISKS International Conference on Korean Studies and contributed to scientifically proving the time-honoured history of the Korean nation.
He says: There are many undiscovered facts in history. We historians must find them out without fail. So, we should not leave any historical records unidentified for the coming generations.
Still today, he makes efforts to unearth much more national culture.
