People who visit Changdok School, located in Mangyongdae District, Pyongyang, are struck with admiration at the landscaping section created distinctively around the school building.

Growing in good harmony in the section, which covers an area of thousands of square metres, are good species of trees, flowers and cover plants. Its teaching staff and students call it a small botanical garden of their school.

The garden, designed formatively and artistically in consideration of various shapes and colours of plants and their different growth effects, surprise even experts.

Ever-green trees like pine and Korean spruce and various other species of trees like lilac, red maple and fruit trees like plum, apple, peach and apricot trees add more to the mood of the school compound.

Every tree, flower and grass reflects the delicate workmanship and sincere devotion of the teaching staff and students.

The work of landscaping started three years ago at the school.

Officials of the school made a deep study on books and videos related to the development trend in landscaping, and solved all problems, arranging from the plants to be planted and making a path in the garden, with the help of experts.

In those days, they devoted efforts to planting many flowers and young trees they obtained at several tree nurseries, floricultural farms and forest management stations in Pyongyang and other places and to acclimatizing and tending them for the students’ study of geography and biology.

Jon Jong Ho, principal of the school says, “Although it took much effort, the garden is good for environment and education of students.”
