The Jonchon fir that grows at the foot of a mountain (640 metres) in Waun-ri, Jonchon County, Jagang Province, is a specially large and old tree.
This tree was planted around 1480.
It is 59.2m tall, 6.5m round at the root neck and 5.9m round at the chest height, and its crown is 19.4m wide from east to west and 21.1m from north to south, covering an area of 409.34m 2 .
The tree grows straight, and its branches are turned regularly from the height of 2m, forming a good-looking pagoda.
In Juche 70 (1981), it bore more than 100 cones, each of which was as large as an ear of maize.
As the tree is the largest and oldest of the firs in the country, it is preserved as a natural monument for its significance in academic research into the lifespan and growth of fir.
