The culture related to Phungsan, the national dog of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, has newly been inscribed on the list of national intangible cultural heritage.
This culture includes raising and taming of the dog, the custom of using the dog in hunting, tales about the dog, different forms of art works including novel, film and drawing on the theme of the dog, registration, survey and estimation of the thoroughbred dog at Phungsan dog show, dissemination of the related scientific and technological knowledge, various socio-cultural activities including academic study and education for the dog and cultural leverage related to it.
Phungsan, which is native to Korea and preserves characteristics unique to the species of the Korean dog, inherits the stamina of the Korean nation.
It is very clever and meek at ordinary times. It follows its master well, and very fierce against its enemy. Though small in body, it is very agile and persevering, and never falls back in fighting against any ferocious animals.
The dog has been used positively in the living of the Korean people for a long period.
Several localities still tell many stories about the dog which conducted righteous deeds for its master.
The place of its origin is Kim Hyong Gwon County (the then Phungsan County).
