Forest and Health

March 21 is International Day of Forests.

Forests covering one third of the world’s land play a vital role in the existence and development of nature and society.

In particular, forests actively contribute to promoting the health and wellbeing of human beings.

According to data available, about 1.6 billion people in the world, with their own local cultures, depend on forests for their livelihood, getting medicines, food, fuels, and shelter from them.

Forests also serve as the cradles of terrestrial biodiversity ecosystems and enliven the existence of terrestrial animals and plants and insects.

Today, however, forests are being severely damaged by natural disasters caused by global warming, deforestation by man and desertification. This has a negative impact on human activities for existence.

Therefore, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests set “Forests and Health” as the theme for this year’s International Day of Forests, calling on all countries to turn out for afforestation and protection of forests.

Our country regards afforestation and protection of forests as a patriotic undertaking of ever-lasting value and channels great efforts into it, as about 80% of its territory is covered with mountains.

With the firm point of view that the protection of forests is just that of land and ecological environment and that of the economy, it set far-sighted phased goals, and has pushed ahead with the afforestation in a planned and effective way.

Consequently, over four billion trees have been planted and over one million hectares of new forests created in recent five years. And large tree nurseries have been remodelled throughout the country to put the sapling production on a scientific, industrial, intensive, automatic and mechanized basis at a higher level.

Meanwhile, strenuous efforts are made to protect forests.

The country conducts a vigorous mass movement to create and protect forests on the occasion of the tree-planting day (March 14) and the month of general mobilization for land management in spring and autumn.

Afforestation in the DPRK will make a positive contribution to the international efforts to protect environment and ease climate change in the region in the future, too.
