Indong Farm in Indong-ri, Toksong County, South Hamgyong Province, is enjoying benefits by making effective use of mountain streams.
Two decades ago, it had only three power stations installed with water-wheel generators. But the output of electricity therefrom was not enough to the farm.
At that time, Ri Nam Il was appointed the manager of the farm. After looking round the power stations, he made up his mind to solve electricity problem first in order to spruce up his farm.
“Now many units are solving electricity problem by taking advantage of their regional characteristics. Many streams around us flow uselessly. When we make effective use of the water resources, we can solve electricity problem needed for our farm quite easily. Let us turn out to better our life.”
In response to his call, the farm started to build one or two small-size hydropower stations with its own efforts every year, with the result that over ten power stations have been built up to now.
Families in the farm, too, installed water-wheel generators made by themselves on the streams flowing before their houses, thus producing electricity enough to their life.
Various types of water wheels installed on streams can be seen anywhere in the farm.
The power stations paid off in reality.
Now the farm produces electricity enough for doing farming and operation of its own production bases at its will.
The electricity from Indong Power Station No. 5 in the seat of the ri village is used in processing foodstuffs and timber. What is more interesting is that a sawing machine does not use electricity in timber processing but runs by directly connecting its belt with a turbine.
The electricity from Indong Power Station No. 13, which was built two years ago, is used in operating a finishing materials production base, the main raw material of which is serpentine abundant in the village.
Unburned tiles with different colours and patterns, artificial slate and paints produced at the base are enough to be used in the construction of dwelling houses in the farm. So, they are supplied even to other villages.
Its villagers are creating more civilized life by making effective use of their physiographical features and natural resources.
