Pidan Island belongs to Sindo County of North Phyongan Province in the northwestern tip of Korea. It is an artificial island formed by building over 40-kilometre-long dam on the tideland to link several islets. A reed farming is done on the island.
The Pidan Island was named by the great leader Kim Il Sung.
One day in June Juche 47(1958), Kim Il Sung visited North Phyongan Province. He made his way through weedy fields to choose the site of a chemical fibre mill with reed as the main raw materials and headed for a tideland on the west coast.
The sea route to the tideland was very rough because of rain and strong wind.
The accompanying officials asked him to go back time and again. Kim Il Sung, however, hurried his way, saying; I am all right. Let's look round all of the tideland.
Looking at the reed fields on the boundless expanse of the tideland aboard a ship in a rough sea for a long while, he said the reed is the eternal wealth of our country and we should turn the reed fields neglected by all for thousands of years into valuable "Pidan (silk) fields". And he unfolded a grand plan to link the islets with an embankment and plant reed on thousands of hectares of new land obtained therefrom and thus change it into a reliable raw materials base of eternal value.
This is how the new history of the Pidan Island began.
Kim Il Sung visited the Pidan Island again in August Juche 55(1966).
That day witnessed rain and shower, strong wind and high waves from the morning. The weather forecast cautioned the sailing ships against the sea wind.
But Kim Il Sung found himself on the dangerous sea route in order to provide the people with a happy life and increase the wealth of the country.
At that time, the tideland embankment project was in full swing on the Pidan island.
That day, Kim Il Sung suggested holding a consultative meeting there where the workers were working and sat face-to-face with the officials. He learned about the project and brightly indicated the ways to promote it as soon as possible.
Thanks to his painstaking efforts and devotion, the Pidan Island was turned into a raw materials base with a lot of reed fields.
Many years has passed since then. In those days, generations were changed several times and the Pidan Island face-lifted, but the devotion of Kim Il Sung for the island is still kept deep in the hearts of the people.
