The Deaf Association of Korea (DAK), founded in December Juche 101 (2012), sets it as its basic mission to represent the interests of persons with hearing impairments in the country, ensure their social status and help them exert their legitimate rights.
The DAK maps out the direction of its activities in a realistic way in keeping with the present trend of development in the work of persons with disabilities and carries on various activities.
From February to May this year, it successfully conducted the third-stage survey of demand on education and occupation of persons with hearing impairments in the capital city of Pyongyang and took relevant measures to this end.
With the aim of intensifying vocational education for them, it is directing efforts to training teachers in charge of such sectors of clothing, building materials, fine arts, beauty treatment, massage, haircut and repair of daily necessities.
Meanwhile, persons with hearing impairments acquire advanced scientific and technical knowledge according to their wish under the distance education system, and their number is on the increase.
The DAK regularly organizes a deliberation of Korean sign language for standardization, and holds short courses for its dissemination on a regular basis.
It pays close attention to the production of sign language multimedia and subtitling of Korean language in literary and artistic presentations, and providing persons with hearing impairments with conditions for cultured life.
It developed e-dictionary Korean Sign Language Dictionary 2.0 and a sign language interpretation support program, thus providing study-aid space convenient for persons with hearing impairments and sign language learners.
Its chairman O Jun Gol said that they would as ever make positive efforts to help all persons with hearing impairments play their role as full-fledged members of society.
