The 52 nd summit of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) was held recently in the Cook Islands, an insular country in the Pacific Ocean.

The meeting brought up Japan’s discharge of nuclear-contaminated water into the ocean and its grave effects on the existence of neighboring countries for discussion between heads of state of Pacific island countries. A joint communiqué was issued showing the concerns that the nuclear discharge is a potential threat to the region’s public health and safety.

The Prime Minister of the Cook Islands who hosted the meeting stressed that preventing discharge of nuclear-contaminated waste into the ocean is clearly stated in the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty. He also said that countries in the region are concerned over Japan’s discharge of nuclear-contaminated water.

Prior to this, in June, the Secretary General of the PIF denounced Japan in a statement that the discharge of nuclear-contaminated waste into the ocean is not merely a safety issue but one involving the ocean’s existence and the fishing industry. He added that it is a crucial issue where the future of this generation and the next rests on in many aspects such as the environment, biological diversity, climate change and health.
