Phyongchon District in the capital city of Pyongyang was awarded the title of model sports district by conducting mass-based sports activities briskly.
The district is arousing interest in sports among working people, youth and students on various occasions, including sports month and sports day.
The Phyongchon Daily Necessaries Factory, the Pyongyang Telecommunications Machine Factory, the Phyongchon Garment Factory and other factories and enterprises, dongs and neighbourhood units in the district have been furnished with sports facilities, sports and amusement apparatuses, national sports apparatuses and cheering tools, and played volleyball, table tennis, swimming, tug of war and various amusement games on national holidays, anniversaries and sports days.
Kansong Junior Middle School, Mirae Primary School and other schools in the district are effectively giving sports lessons and organizing extracurricular sports activities and specialized sports groups with the main emphasis on increasing students’ height, building up their bodies in a balanced way and teaching them basic sports knowledge and the techniques of more than one sports event.
In the course of this, Haeun Technical Senior Middle School has won the women’s volleyball event of the national schoolchildren’s sports contest over 10 times since Juche 101 (2012). Taekwon-Do, table tennis, boxing and rhythmic gymnastics groups of many schools came first in various contests.
Phyongchon District Extracurricular Juvenile Sports School has made vigorous efforts to improve the scientific level of sports and train reserve players, with the result that it has topped the total rankings nine times in the boxing event of the national juvenile sports school contest and bagged gold and many other medals in various events of the contest.
Amid active mass-based sports activities, more than 10 schools in the district won the title of twice model sports school, seven schools, the title of model sports school, and scores of factories and enterprises, the title of model sports units.
The district has produced two Labour Heroes, seven People’s Athletes and 25 Merited Athletes.
