The Earth Science and Technology Faculty of Kim Chaek University of Technology has developed the tree identification program “Samsong” 1.0 needed for forest survey in cooperation with the Central Forest Design Technology Institute.
The program uses artificial intelligence technology to enable the forest and landscape design and forest management sectors to quickly retrieve information about trees by means of the images of their leaves and thereby make an effective survey of forest resources, a preceding process in forest design.
When they come across any tree unknown to them in the forest zones and field wood lands, forest surveyors using this program can immediately identify its scientific name, distribution, use, leaves and fruits by photographing its leaves with a cellphone.
The program has three retrieval systems—general, detailed and image retrieval.
In general retrieval, if you enter the name of a tree, you can obtain the information about its classification, type, sexuality, distribution, use, image and the like. In detailed retrieval, you can get such information by entering retrieval conditions according to such biological classification as order, family and genus and type and according to a tree name.
In image retrieval, you can retrieve information by photographing the relevant tree leaves with a cellphone.
“This program is helpful to experts and students alike in their studies,” said Kim Chol, a researcher of the university.
