What attitude of mind should does an educator have to treat his or her students?
Instructor Om Su Ryon at the Mangyongdae Schoolchildren's Palace answered the question as follows:
"Teachers should have the mind of considering the students they teach to be their own children. When they devote their all to the students with love for them as the parents are always concerned about their children, they can bring up the students wonderfully, I think."
Om Su Ryon took charge of the percussion instrument circle of the palace in 2006.
When she discovered an unusual rhythmical sense from her first disciple, she is said to have been very pleased at the thought that she could train a student with special skill. But it was not so easy.
Sometimes she vacillated to give up her job, when she looked back upon her childhood.
She fully developed her talents at the Mangyongdae Schoolchildren's Palace without paying a penny.
The wonderful palace had one hundred and tens of circle rooms and hosted the splendid New Year performance every year.
Om Su Ryon had a valuable and beautiful memory of the Mangyongdae Schoolchildren's Palace. That's why she became an instructor of the palace after graduating from a university.
She buckled down to her job with great determination. She stayed up all night to study world information and called on authoritative educators in the field of art education to learn excellent teaching methods from them. In those days, she acquired her own method of instruction and applied it with success.
The first disciple she always remembers became a percussionist of a famous band of the country.
This year, too, Om Su Ryon trained the winner of a national contest. She also presented a thesis on contents and methods of extracurricular lessons for raising the students' ability to make the most of rhythm in teaching the percussion on the basis of the experience she got during her career as an instructor.
She was active at the Mangyongdae Schoolchildren's Palace as a circle member for 10 years and as an instructor for 17 years.
"Whenever looking at the Mangyongdae Schoolchildren's Palace which seems to be calling the children with its arms open, I am determined to train a greater number of good talents."
Om Su Ryon is a strict teacher yet ardent "mother" of the circle members.
