The 99 Meanders of the Chonsang Stream in Sampho-ri, Yonsa County, North Hamgyong Province, is a natural monument.
They are located in a valley, which the Chonsang Stream, a tributary of the Yonmyon River that rises in Kwanmo Peak of the Hamgyong Mountain Range, flows.
Found near the stream are mountains over 2 000 metres above sea level, such as Kwanmo Peak and Mt Tojong.
The name of the stream means water near the sky, and the meanders are called so because of the many rocky curves the stream rushes through.
The stream is also called a stony river with 99 meanders.
The meanders, 4 to 18 metres wide, 3 to 10 metres deep (over 10 metres in the deepest), and 18 km long (16 km in a beeline), are formed by the peculiar texture of granite.
Bedrock forms the bottom and both sides of the meanders.
In the rainy season, the stream runs down swiftly with roaring sound and, in the dry season, round stones, big and small, are exposed in different places.
As the meanders are found in a river in the highest place in Korea, it is of great academic significance.
