Mt Jangsu lies between Jaeryong and Sinwon counties in South Hwanghae Province.
The mountain took its name from the fact that it has fresh air, clear water and many medicinal herbs with high efficacy and the inhabitants lived long lives.
It has been called differently according to the change of scenery around the year.
It was called Mt Hongak in spring for the red tints of azalea and rhododendron blossoms dying the most of the mountain, Mt Chongak in summer for the lushness, Mt Phungak in autumn for its crimson tinge, Mt Paegak in winter for its frost-covered trees and snow-capped peaks, and Mt Chiak for its many pheasants.
It has been also called “Kumgang of Hwanghae” from ancient times. Mt Kumgang was regarded as the “prince” of beauty among the mountains in the eastern part of the country, while Mt Jangsu as the “queen” of beauty among the ravines in the western plains.
Its range stretching from east to west has a typical quartzite stratum with still strong resistance to erosion. Geologically, this revealed layer is called the “Jangsusan quartzite stratum” after the name of the mountain.
The mountain has more than 100 peaks such as Pojok, Jangsu and Rokjok, plus a number of scenic spots like Sesim Falls, Yaksu Falls and Samhyongje Rocks.
There are also Hyon Hermitage and Jangsusan Fortress, historical relics demonstrating the unique architecture of the Korean ancestors.
On the hillside of a cliff at the entrance to the mountain is small Hyon Hermitage belonging to the Myoum Temple, the largest one in Mt Jangsu, which was built around the late sixth century.
The hermitage is also called the Taram Temple as it seems to hang in the middle of the rock.
The mountain has such indigenous species as Celtis cordifoia and Forsythia densiflora , as well as pine, Fraxinus rhynchophylla , Quercus mongolica , maple and Korean pine.
In particular, Forsythia densiflora , one of the natural monuments of the country, is under good protection.
Thick forests are populated by roe deer, badger, raccoon dog, hare, fox and wild boar.
The mountain is home to pheasants, cuckoos, orioles, owls, ringdoves and other wild birds. The chirps, twitters and the sound of running streams are music to the ears of tourists.
Mt Jangsu is one of the favourite destinations for the local tourists.
