India Hits Back U.S. Over Interference in Internal Matters

Date: 09/04/2024 | Source: Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EN) | Read original version at source

Recently, the U.S. blatant interference in India’s internal affairs has drawn an immediate backlash from the latter.

A few weeks ago, the Indian Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Delhi Chief Minister for a liquor policy scam. During pressers held on March 23 and 27, a spokesperson for the U.S. State Department officiously commented on the matter saying that the U.S. “encourages fair, transparent and timely legal processes” and that no one should object to that.

In regard to this, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned a relevant U.S. embassy official in New Delhi and protested against the comments. “In diplomacy, states are expected to be respectful of the sovereignty and internal affairs of others,” it rebuked, adding that casting aspersions on the matter is unwarranted.

On March 28, in a weekly press briefing, a MEA spokesperson said that India takes strong objection to the “unacceptable and unwarranted” remarks of the U.S. He continued as follows:

India is a country with independent and democratic judiciary, and is willing to defend it from any external imputation. In India, legal processes are driven only by the rule of law.

Meanwhile, the Vice-President of India said in a speech at a commemorative meeting that India’s most powerful judiciary will stand strong and that India doesn’t need lectures from anyone.
