The newly-built Kangdong Greenhouse Complex in a suburb of the capital city of Pyongyang has a greenhouse for cylindrical vegetable cultivation.
It is a high-tech greenhouse, the first of its kind in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
Here, artificial light sources of different colours and luminous intensities are used to put vegetable production on an intensive, optimized and intelligent footing.
There are over 40 cylindrical cultivation frames in three layers, each of which is installed with a dripping irrigation system, lighting, control device and driving gear. The light colour and intensity vary according to the features of vegetables and the period of their growth.
The frames rotate at regular intervals, and provide favourable conditions such as a high rate of nutrient substance absorption and light utilization for the vegetables arranged in a cylindrical shape around the light source.
The day and night cycle can be adjusted at will, and all environmental factors such as temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide concentration can be precisely controlled so as to harvest vegetables over 20 days after planting seedlings.
Tasty and highly-nutritious leafy and functional vegetables including celery and basil are growing healthily in the cylindrical cultivation frames.
The greenhouse can be said to be a “plant factory” as it can increase per-unit-area output several times while saving much labour as compared with conventional hydroponic cultivation.
