The resourceful and talented ancestors of the Korean nation had already observed astronomical and meteorological phenomena since the ancient times and carved them on flat stones and made efforts to study and grasp their essence.
The constellations carved on the flat stones of dolmens in different areas of Korea, including Hwagang-ri in Kangdong County and Sunan District of Pyongyang Municipality and Sangwon County of North Hwanghae Province, show the level of development of astronomy in the period of Tangun’s Korea (early 30th century BC—mid-15th century BC). More than 200 relics of constellations dating back to 4 000 to 5 000 years have been unearthed in the Taedong River basin centred on Pyongyang.
They prove that in the ancient times the Korean ancestors acquired a fairly high level of astronomical knowledge so as to work out a map of stars and constellations.
The round holes of carved stars and constellations differ in size.
The constellations carved on the flat stones of dolmens, traced back to the early 30th century BC, almost look alike to the present astronomical charts.
This proves that the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is one of the cradles of ancient astronomy.
