An Yun Mi from the Pyongyang Municipal Taekwon-Do Team is among the winners at the 22nd ITF Taekwon-Do World Championships held in Kazakhstan in August last year.
As Merited Athlete, she garnered five gold medals, one silver medal and one champion’s belt in the women’s individual sparring, group sparring and other events in the veterans’ category (silver-level).
Back in middle school days, she began to cut a conspicuous figure in a number of national junior Taekwon-Do championships. In 2006 she triumphed in her debut at the 7th junior ITF Taekwon-Do world championships.
During her 10-odd-year stint in the North Hwanghae Provincial Taekwon-Do Team, she won several national and international competitions, demonstrating the spirit of the Korean nation to the world.
Afterwards, she graduated from Sariwon College of Physical Education and was appointed as an instructor at the juvenile Taekwon-Do school affiliated to the Pyongyang Municipal Taekwon-Do Team.
She worked hard to help young practitioners train basic movements, teaching them tactical insight, alternating continuous kick, one-step continuous stroke and other techniques and experiences she had acquired during her playing career.
Besides, she educated them into displaying the soul and spirit of the Korean nation as befitting members of the home of Taekwon-Do.
Among her trainees are Kye Ju Hyang, 17, who won a national championship, and Jang Song Yong, 17, who took four gold medals, one silver medal and one winner’s belt in the women’s individual sparring, heavyweight and other events of the youth category at the 22nd ITF Taekwon-Do World Championships.
She often says to her trainees: “The height of the winners’ podium we will stand on is just that of our country.”
