Ten years have passed since a workers’ hostel was completed at the Pyongyang Kim Jong Suk Textile Mill on the banks of the picturesque Taedong River.

“On his visit to the newly-built hostel on April 29 2014, the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un said he was very pleased and satisfied after looking round the building and earnestly requested the officials of the mill to take maternal care of the hostellers,” said Kim Chol Jin, a hostel management official.

Two days later, there was a great party at the palatial hostel arranged by General Secretary Kim Jong Un for the workers in celebration of May Day.

“They displayed great enthusiasm in cloth production in order to return the favour shown by the General Secretary who gave prominence to ordinary workers by providing them with the palatial hostel. In the course of this, many girls have become labour innovators and tended the building well in a competitive way to preserve its original state,” said Kim.

Girls lead a cultured life at the hostel equipped with all communal amenities for the life of hostellers including a shop, beauty salon, library, bathhouse, clothes repair shop and treatment room.

After finishing their daily work, they talk about the sources of pride of their native places and their parents in their cosy and snug rooms and some others burst into laughter for the humour of their funny fellows.

Bookworms go to the library or e-reading room and worker-students receive online college education as they attend online lectures in their spare time.

“Thanks to the college, I could become a skilled worker and labour innovator,” said weaver Ju Yong Mi who graduated from a factory college with honours last year.

In the dwelling place of girls, the beauty salon is frequented by them.

“We are eager to give them excellent beauty treatments as they are hard workers and labour innovators,” said hairdresser Kwon Song Hui.

The girls are very pleased with their elegant hairstyles as they leave the salon.

The cooking practice ground is another favourite haunt of the residents of the hostel.

They hone their culinary skills by preparing dishes they saw on TV or in cookery books in the place equipped with all kinds of kitchen utensils.

According to its keeper Ri Chun Hui, it is crowded with “cooks” especially on holidays, rest days or birthdays and the dishes made by them are never inferior to those served at restaurants.

They also sing songs in reflection of their fulfilling life using the karaoke machine in the hall on each floor.

The weavers say in unison that they lead a life full of optimism as they have officials who take meticulous care of them with parental affection and the nice home equipped with all necessary living conditions, which enables them to exert themselves in work.
