President Kim Il Sung of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea was a veteran statesman of the world who made an immortal contribution to accomplishing the human cause of independence through his energetic external activities under the banner of Juche and independence and a great sage admired by the world progressives along with the stirring 20th century.
In his lifetime he had met over 70 000 foreigners from all walks of life, including party and state leaders and prominent figures in the political, social, academic and press circles and ordinary people. Among them were people with different ideologies and political views, and even former leaders of states hostile to the DPRK.
Stalin of the former Soviet Union, Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai of China, Fidel Castro of Cuba, Soekarno of Indonesia, Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia, Ho Chi Minh of Vietnam, Shin Kanemaru of Japan, Tito of Yugoslavia, Mitterrand of France, Jimmy Carter of the US, female writer Ruise Rinser of Germany and other state leaders and prominent figures in the East and West met him and spoke highly of his ennobling personality.
Zhang Weihua of China and Nobichenko of Russia did not hesitate to safeguard the President even at the cost of their lives. The President’s noble love for and moral obligations to them and many other foreign friends showcased his comradely obligations that always remained faithful to his friendly relations with them.
In the late 1960s, when President Soekarno of Indonesia was hospitalized for his rapidly deteriorating health, Kim Il Sung showed special care for him, giving joy and strength to him and, after his death, took warm care of his children and family with paternal affection.
He sent competent medical workers for the former Austrian Prime Minister who got his legs paralysed in his latter years so as to help him rise to his feet again. Such legendary stories tell about his warm humanity.
That is why the former Portuguese President Francisco da Costa Gomes said that Kim Il Sung was indeed a great man steering the world by virtue of benevolence.
