Spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry Slams U.S. and Japan for Regional Tension

Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, recently slammed the U.S. and its followers for aggravating the situation in the Asia-Pacific region under the pretext of strengthening “extended deterrence”.

She stated that such an act poses a great threat to Russia’s security, saying that Washington’s aim is to use Japan and other followers as faithful guides for realizing their interests in the Asia-Pacific region.

It runs counter to international obligation and the constitutional provisions for Japan to enforce rearmament while clinging to strengthening military cooperation with the U.S., she stressed. She further stressed that Japan should maintain its position as a peaceful and non-nuclear state which it was offered when it joined the UN with the help of the former USSR.

She concluded by saying that Russia is closely following the politico-military cooperation of the U.S. with Japan and other allies in close connection with other possibilities of additional threats to Russia, and warned that Russia will take due countermeasures if need be.
