A young girl became the focus of attention at the second national foreign languages conversation contest of junior and senior middle school students, which was held in November last year amid the interest of many teachers and students across the country.
She was Im Song A, a first-grader at the then Songyo Junior Middle School in Songyo District, Pyongyang Municipality.
The contest final drew more than 130 students from the junior category.
Eight students from Pyongyang took part in the final, and Song A was among them as the only first-grader.
According to the results, she became one of the two winners to be acclaimed by the audience.
From the beginning of the contest, Song A expressed what she thought in English fluently and freely. Her linguistic fluidity captured the imagination of the audience, and some of whom wondered if she took a language course.
But she was anything but unusual. If any, she has combined the whole course of study and life with English since she started to learn it.
She has thirty volumes of diaries she has written in English.
The books are a good reminder of her assiduous efforts to take notes of her daily impressions in English since she began to learn English words to date.
Her mother Pak Un Byol said she has talked with her daughter in English every day to help her have a good command of the language, but the credit goes to her teachers who encouraged her to build up confidence.
At present, Song A outpaces her mates of the same year in speaking English. For her correct pronunciation, she is involved in producing English learning multimedia for preschool and primary school children.
